Professional Development Programs
Students qualifying for a DC Development Program can earn meaningful professional experience. Careful consultation, ongoing supervision, and a weekly seminar guarantee that a student can explore the substantive aspects of a possible career while also living and working in one of the world's most exciting cities. How It WorksThe Osgood Center offers students professional training in the fields of their policy-relevant interests and topics of their choice. We consult with the participant to establish an area of research, identify DC resources and direct the participant to the many hearings, conferences, and lectures relevant to the subject matter. The end product is a professional blog or a research paper. If the written work is approved by a professional in the field, it will be published online in the Osgood Center "Student Forum on International Affairs." These can be either for credit or non-credit experiences. In addition to academic research, the student will be required to conduct expert interviews, attend Congressional hearings and Think Tank briefings (Brookings, Woodrow Wilson Center, CSIS, etc.), and interact with other interns in a weekly seminar on "Politics in Washington" taught by Osgood President, Shelton Williams. To apply, contact the Osgood Center at saistype@aol.com. QualificationsStudents participating in an Osgood Center Professional Development Program must be at least of sophomore standing, not on academic or disciplinary probation, and prepared to meet the academic requirements of the program. The latter entail a once-a-week seminar on politics in Washington and professional skills (networking, resume writing, office survival strategies, and career counseling). A second set of academic requirements include an ongoing analytical journal or a final reflection paper. Costs and deadlinesCertain colleges (e.g. Austin College) arrange to pay the following fees out of tuition charges, so please check with The Osgood Center regarding fee payment arrangements). Please note that these are not hard deadlines. The Osgood Center allows for flexibility in regard to personal schedules and circumstances. For academic year 2011-2012, the program fees are as follows:
NOTE: The Osgood Center presents affordable programs for all. Fees, housing, and incidental charges are set to allow wide participation. Our policies regarding fees are thus: application fees are not refundable; program fees are due in full prior to events and are not refundable after two weeks prior an event; and housing fees, while optional, are due in full prior to an event and are never refundable after one month prior an event. Students must sign waivers upon arriving for Osgood events and must provide own medical and health insurance. Housing
