The size will be capped at 480 delegates. There will be six committees (SC, GA1, GA3, WHO, UN Population Fund and the UN Committee on Trade and Development). Each committee will receive a briefing from an expert speaker ( e.g., the SC briefer will be the State Department official who heads its UN Affairs Office). Embassy briefing can be arranged. The Conference will be developmental - it will focus on teaching new delegates. A modified version of New York rules will be enforced and all Directors and Assistant Directors will be NMUN-trained.
W Model United Nations is a simulation of the real United Nations. School teams are assigned to different countries with teams of students representing different UN committees. After extensive research on their countries’ policies toward specific topics, students as representatives of different countries work within their respective committees together to formulate resolutions and reports, the tools that the United Nations use to initiate action that affects the world. Students also learn about United Nations procedure, treaties, the balance of maintaining a country’s policy and interests while being able to work with other countries in order to further the work of the committee. In all, Model United Nations is a program that expands a student’s knowledge of the world gives them a chance to experience politics and international affairs from many different perspectives. WHY HAVE A MODEL UNITED NATIONS SIMULATION? Most Model United Nations conferences are national and international competitions. However, the Osgood Center offers a program that is a simulation of a conference, in order to prepare schools for national conferences. The simulation is a chance for schools not only to practice speech-making, resolution and report writing, but to participate in these activities with students from other schools representing other countries. The Osgood Center will tailor the topics and committees to ensure that students are able to debate and engage in topics that are relevant to the countries and committees assigned to them by a national conference. WHAT WILL THE MODEL UNITED NATIONS SIMULATION LOOK LIKE? The simulation will be run as a full-fledged conference in order to allow students to practice proper protocol, understand procedures, and become comfortable with skills such as negotiation, caucusing, and speech making. A full staff of directors will staff and run the various committees. The directors and assistant directors of the committees will also occasionally “stop the action” to give "teaching points" on what did or did not happen in a negotiating session. This simulation will provide a combination of hands-on practice on a large scale and also guidance and expertise from experienced former delegates. COMMITTEE EMAILS
We encourage you to contact the embassy of the nation you are representing and ask them for a briefing. The best time for the briefing would be on October 31, before the opening ceremonies. You may find contact information of your embassy by clicking on the link below. We recommend asking for the Public Affairs section. Note that you should ask for a general briefing, since the embassy will tell you that the New York Mission deals with UN affairs. Just inform them that you wish to ask questions about foreign policy issues. They have always been cooperative in the past. Please let us know if you encounter difficulties. http://www.embassy.org/embassies/ FEES: Registration fee is non-refundable.
