Internships

Live and work in DC for a summer or a semester. All majors are welcome. (http://ielnet.org/)

Students qualifying for a DC internship may apply for a position in or out of the Government and earn meaningful professional experience. Careful placement, ongoing supervision, and a weekly seminar guarantee that a student can explore the substantive aspects of a possible career while also living and working in one of the world's most exciting cities.

Qualifications

Consult the Washington Internship Institute's site for WII's qualifications (http://ielnet.org/), but students participating in an Osgood Center internship must be at least of sophomore standing, not on academic or disciplinary probation, and prepared to meet the academic requirements of the program.  The latter entail a once-a-week seminar on politics in Washington and professional development (networking, resume writing, office survival strategies, and career counseling). A second set of academic requirements include an ongoing analytical journal and a final reflection paper.

Costs and deadlines

Certain colleges (e.g. Austin College) arrange to pay the following fees out of tuition charges, so please check with The Osgood Center regarding fee payment arrangements)

For academic year 2008-2009, the program fees are as follows:

Fall 2009

$2800, application deadline: July 15, 2008 or until all internships are filled.

Spring 2009

$2800, application deadline: November 1, 2008 or until all internships are filled.

Summer 2008

$2800, application deadline: April 15, 2008 or until all internships are filled.

NOTE:  The Osgood Center presents affordable programs for all.  Fees, housing, and incidental charges are set to allow wide participation.  Our policies regarding fees are thus: application fees are not refundable; program fees are due in full prior to events and are not refundable after two weeks prior an event; and housing fees, while optional, are due in full prior to an event and are never refundable after one month prior an event.

Students must sign waivers upon arriving for Osgood events and must provide own medical and health insurance.

Housing

The Osgood Center uses Washington Intern Student Housing (WISH) for students who need who meet WISH deadlines. Go to: http://www.internsdc.com/ for costs and housing options. Please contact the Osgood Center if you need information regarding additional summer housing options. The WII offers its own housing option: (http://ielnet.org/)

Possible Placements

We know that there are many different internships with many different agencies in Washington, D.C.  We highly recommend doing an internship to gain professional work experience and to network contacts.  However, to be a valid learning experience, an internship needs to involve substantive content and should also have an integrative intellectual experience with a trained faculty member.  The Osgood Center is not a government agency, but we can arrange for you to focus on a content area of your own choosing and to attend hearings, lectures, and interviews on that subject.  You will meet the best that Washington has to offer on your chosen subject. You will also participate in a weekly seminar with other interns and with Dr. Shelton Williams, a college professor for thirty-eight years.

We work hard on your behalf.  The tuition charge is $2800, though academic credit must be arranged through your home institution.  A non-refundable $300 application fee (applied to your tuition) is due immediately.  Half of the remaining tuition is due two months prior to your internship and the remainder is due one month prior to the start of the internship.  There is no refund after thirty days prior to the beginning of your internship.  Please let us know how we can be of service to you.

Internships at the Osgood Center for International Studies

The Osgood Center is offering a series of internships to allow students to research and write on a topic on international significance and, if the research product is approved by a professional in the field, be published online in the Osgood Center "Student Forum on International Affairs."  These can be either for credit or non-credit internships.  In addition to academic research, the student will be required to conduct expert interviews, attend Congressional hearings and Think Tank briefings (Brookings, Woodrow Wilson Center, CSIS, etc.), and interact with other interns in a weekly seminar on "Politics in Washington" taught by Osgood President, Shelton Williams.  To apply, contact the Osgood Center at saistype@aol.com.

Examples of Past Osgood Center Internships

Below are some possible topics, but we can individualize your topic and your work.   We are happy to help you with any Public Policy area on which you would like to focus.

This project will focus on the diplomacy surrounding the Iranian nuclear program, the implications of the negotiations on the Nonproliferation regime, and the impact on the greater Middle East.

This project will focus on the US efforts to bring democracy to the Middle East and the redevelopment of Iraq as the center piece for this undertaking.
